Intensive Meditation Enhances Immune System Strength
Researchers conducting an in-depth genomic investigation on how meditation influences biological processes involved with disease, have discovered that 8 days of intensive meditation lead to significant immune system activation.
Meditation’s positive effects are well known; however, its genetic and molecular impacts are unknown. Genetic profile samples provided by 106 individuals were studied before and after attending an “Inner Engineering” retreat with yoga and meditation programs focused on inner well-being; during which participants stay silent for 8 days while meditating 10 hours each day and adhering to vegan meals while adhering to an established sleep schedule.
Blood samples were taken from those participating in a meditation retreat five to eight weeks in advance, before beginning, at completion and three months post retreat, for analysis of immune-related and other cellular pathways that changed post retreat; 220 genes directly related to immune response showed increased activity after retreat completion.
This included increased activity in 68 genes related to interferon signaling – an essential aspect of your body’s anti-cancer and anti-virus responses – after attending the retreat. Furthermore, meditation appears to have had the largest influence on immune system improvement rather than gender differences, sleep patterns or diet.
Researchers collected over 70 million data points from these blood samples and discovered that Inner Engineering practices dramatically triggered multiple genes related to immunity.
Researchers found that meditation could increase gene activity for interferon-signaling genes significantly, which boost interferon proteins’ role in helping other immune system parts protect against viruses. Further, several studies have demonstrated an imbalance in interferon signaling among those suffering severe COVID-19 symptoms. Meditation employs an array of coordinated core gene networks and regulators that work in unison to positively alter an immune system’s response.
According to researchers, their findings could also prove beneficial in treating other immune-related conditions like multiple sclerosis and COVID-19. Meditation boosts activity in 68 interferon-related genes while those suffering from severe COVID-19 often lack interferon production which prevents viruses from being defeated effectively.
